A Beginner’s Guide to Google Merchant Center

January 3, 2023

It’s the year 2023, and eCommerce has completely taken over the world. We do almost everything online, from grocery shopping to buying the latest gadgets. You could be in your pajamas, relaxing in the house, and get almost anything delivered the same day. In fact, you could be on vacation and still run your business, provided you have an internet connection.

The internet world is rapidly evolving, and no one keeps up with the trends better than Google. They are always at the forefront of technology and user experience. With the Google Merchant Center, Google has stepped up its game.

Understanding Google Merchant Center

This is a platform where e-retailers can upload product details commonly used to facilitate Google Shopping Ads. You could also post information regarding your eCommerce store, taxes, and shipping in the Merchant Center.

All the products that appear when you conduct a Google Shopping search are usually uploaded through the Google Merchant Center.

The Merchant Center is also a resource for the free, organic product listings recently added by Google to its Shopping Tab.

How Google Merchant Center Works

To create a Merchant Center account, you must first create a Google account.

You can use Google Merchant Center if you already have an account (such as Google My Business or a Gmail account).

Step 2 is to supply Google with data about your online store. This includes your company’s name, shop domain, physical address, customer service contacts, and a few other basic details.

Then, provide your product details in a way that complies with Google’s feed specifications. A unique product title, an ID, a link to the product on your website, the product price, a link to an image of your product, and a description are some of the characteristics you must include for every product on your data feed.

When your feed is ready, you can send it to Google Merchant Center.

To keep your products “active” and running ads continuously, you must submit product data every 30 days. However, if the data in your feed changes, you must update it more frequently. This includes adding new products, removing old ones, items going out of stock, prices changing, a special sale beginning, and so on.

You could even update your feed up to four times per day.

Why Use Google Merchant Center for Your Business

By linking you with the targeted consumer across Google Search, YouTube, and other platforms, you can drive higher sales and use the insights gathered from each sale to present your products in front of even more relevant customers. With Google Merchant Center, your company can provide Google with an updated catalog of all the product offerings it wishes to sell. Above all, Google Merchant Center gives your brand options for how your offerings are listed. You can choose between the free and paid product listings. Each listing has its own set of advantages.
